Job Description

The Career Peer Advisor Program is aimed at providing students the opportunity to further the mission of the Northern Illinois University Career Service department through providing awareness and assistance to the wider campus community in the area of career development. Career Peer Advisor Mission The Career Peer Advisor (CPA) is a paraprofessional position. CPAs work individually with students to assist with career needs, such as resume and cover letter assistance, interview skills, and navigation of Huskies Get Hired and the department’s website. They also perform support tasks, such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, entering data, distributing marketing materials, and assisting with office projects. CPAs occasionally conduct presentations for small groups and promote our office at tabling events, such as open houses and orientation fairs. We invite you to review the job posting and to apply! JOB RESPONSIBILITIES • Provide drop-in clients their first point of contact with the Career Services Office and direct them to the most appropriate service or staff member for their needs • Assist drop-in clients with resume and cover letter development, job search tools, and interview preparation for internships and career opportunities • Attend biweekly, after-hours meetings of the CPA Team • Schedule and confirm appointments for clients and counselors • Serve as Career Services ambassador and promote events and services to the NIU campus community • Staff career fairs and other departmental events and provide support to contribute to their success • Promote Career Services by staffing tables at university events, such as orientation and open houses • Present career development workshops to the NIU campus community • Collaborate with supervisor and Career Services staff on various projects and initiatives. Assist with other projects as assigned by your supervisor • Conduct additional clerical and support activities as needed including data entry and filing SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS • Must be a sophomore, junior or senior • Strong communication skills demonstrated through customer service, peer advising, and public speaking • Ability to work as a member of a team • Willingness to learn about different groups of people, identities, and experiences, and an ability to establish working relationships with people from backgrounds different from your own • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills. Excellent attention to detail • Must be available for scheduling 10-15 hours per week during regular business hours. Some evening availability is required • Must be a student in good academic standing with a 2.5 GPA or higher APPLICATION PROCESS Interested students should apply through Huskies Get Hired, job number 23526.
